Upcoming Events

This video presentation examines museum exhibits created over the last four decades at the Mitchell Indigenous Archaeological Site (site 39DV2). The exhibits are designed to help visitors achieve a better understanding of the Plains Village culture of 1,000 years ago. Each display is based on direct archaeological evidence collected through excavations at the site.

SDAS Annual Meeting

Date: September 25-26, 2026

Location: Rapid City, South Dakota -- South Dakota (Archaeological Research Center)

The annual statewide meeting of the South Dakota Archaeological Society will be held Sept. 25-26, 2026 in Rapid City. Presentations will take place on Sept. 26 at the Archaeological Research Center. We encourage members to attend! The annual meeting includes presentations, chapter updates, elections, and discussions on current archaeological research across the region.

We are encouraging members and others to submit an abstract for a call for papers for the Annual SDAS Meeting in Rapid City, at the Archaeological Research Center for Saturday, September 26th, 2026. If you plan on attending or presenting please RSVP, ASAP at sdas.treasurer.sdas@gmail.com. That way we can have a count for presentations and for the Meet and Greet for burgers, brats, and hot dogs. Abstracts are due September 18th, 2026 to sdas.treasurer.sdas@gmail.com for scheduling and printing of the Annual Meeting schedule.

Chapter Meetings

The South Dakota Archaeological Society hosts meetings, field activities, public lectures, and collaborative events with museums, universities, and tribal partners throughout the year. Check back often for updates. Local SDAS chapters (Sioux Falls, Black Hills and Vermillion) hold regular meetings and presentations. Meeting schedules will be posted here as they are announced.
